Trauma-Informed Therapy and Counseling

Because Brown women deserve therapy that gets us!

You’re not “Bad” for speaking your truth.

Maybe you heard family, your cultural or religious community, or even a therapist say that abuse is “just cultural”. This can leave you feeling silenced, unseen, unheard, and like you couldn’t rely on people to protect you.

Just because abuse was normalized as “cultural” doesn’t make it okay. If you’ve started to question the things you’ve been told, you’ve come to the right place.

Who I Am

Hey there! I’m Tracy and I’m a licensed therapist who helps Brown women in New York, New Jersey, and California let go of their past and stop betraying themselves through culturally affirming trauma-informed therapy!

How I’m Different

I’m an EMDR Certified™ Therapist who specializes in culturally affirming therapy for Brown women and South Asian women. I offer a gold standard of care for trauma and I also understand that going to therapy to air out your “dirty laundry” isn’t the easiest thing to do when you’ve been told, “Brown people don’t go to therapy”.

Unlike most therapists who may rush you to do things you’re not ready for, I take things slow and I meet you where you’re at. I’m not here to put a label on what you’ve experienced, or to make judgements on what you choose to call them. I’m here to help you make sense of them.

What I offer

Joining: I meet you where you’re at to help you build the safe space to name the things you’ve been taught to suppress in the name of “culture”.

Grounding: Together, we’ll develop tools to help you access a calm state, and help you build resources to get through life’s difficult moments and challenging triggers, even with emotionally immature family members.

Past, present, and future: We’ll identify the past memories holding you back, how they impact your life now, and how you’d like to respond to these triggers better in the future.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about trauma-informed therapy at my practice.

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly specialized type of therapy that helps you regulate the part of your brain that stores traumatic memories and regulates emotions. Through the use of bilateral stimulation, we can process traumatic memories and help you come to a place of acceptance.

  • For some, eye movements can be intimidating. In my practice, I incorporate the butterfly hug and shoulder-tapping as an alternative to eye movements, and can also help you feel in your body.

  • That’s OK. Therapy is not one-size-fits-all and EMDR is not the only thing I offer. There are many ways we can work with trauma.

  • ACT is a nonjudgemental approach with mindfulness techniques and behavioral skills that help you cope with unwanted thoughts and feelings first. Sometimes you need to feel safe in your body first before truly changing the way you think about yourself, your relationship to culture, and the world.

  • That’s OK. How you feel in this space is the most important to me and is the foundation of our work, regardless of the approach or where we start. Healing from trauma isn’t linear, and we may use several different support systems and approaches to help you remember that you are more than your identity, and you are more than what someone did to you.
